The True Commodity: Time

The True Commodity: Time

In our fast-paced lives, we often forget that our most precious commodity isn’t money, status, or possessions — it’s time. Time is limited, non-renewable, and constantly slipping away.

Surah Al-Asr serves as a profound reminder of this truth. Allah swears by time itself, emphasising its value, and then declares that "Indeed, mankind is in loss."

This loss is not just material — it’s the loss of youth, energy, opportunity, and ultimately, life itself. We’re born into this loss, spending our days without guarantee of tomorrow. But Allah doesn’t leave us in despair. He outlines four qualities that give time meaning: belief, righteous action, encouraging truth, and practicing patience.

These aren’t passive traits — they require intentional living. A believer who uses their limited time to do good, to uplift others, and to remain steadfast amidst trials, escapes this loss.

Nothing they do is wasted. Even moments of struggle become investments in something eternal.

Though we don’t know how much time we have, Surah Al-Asr teaches us to use every moment purposefully. When time is spent in faith and good deeds, it becomes a means of salvation — a path from loss to everlasting gain.
